Office of Research for Undergraduates

Students are encouraged to explore and engage in research, creative works and scholarly activities. The ORU is proud to champion the vision, marketing, and coordination of these activities for undergraduates at Miami in partnership with faculty mentors and staff across the institution. Our programs and events aim to broaden the participation of ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈs and mentors, recognize promising projects through awards, and to raise the visibility of the various forms of research, creative works and scholarly activities across campus and beyond.

Doctoral Undergraduate Opportunities for Scholarship

Each undergraduate ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈ will be paired with a graduate ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈ to work together on a research project under the supervision of a faculty member in a Ph.D. granting department.

First Year Research Experience

The First Year Research Experience aims to jumpstart ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈ involvement in research and inquiry at the very start of their college experience, establishing meaningful relationships with Miami faculty, graduate ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈs, and their peers outside of the traditional classroom setting.

Undergraduate Research Award

The Undergraduate Research Award program allows for individuals and teams from any major to request funding to support faculty-mentored undergraduate research, creative, and scholarly endeavors. Students can use awards for new ventures, to augment prior work, or in relation to an existing faculty project.

Undergraduate Research Forum

Miami's Undergraduate Research Forum is a celebration of collaborative learning which showcases scholarly and creative works conducted by undergraduate ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈs, under the guidance of dedicated faculty, staff, and graduate ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈ mentors.

Undergraduate Summer Scholars

The Undergraduate Summer Scholars program focuses on ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈ-centered learning through mentored research during a 10-week summer program offering active, engaged educational experiences for undergraduate ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈs.

Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR)

¾Ã¾ÃÈÈ strongly encourages everyone (faculty, staff, undergraduate and graduate ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈs) to learn about CUR membership benefits and professional development opportunities.

Strategic Plan

Undergraduate research offers numerous benefits to ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈs including mentorship, critical thinking, technical proficiency, and communication. To facilitate these outcomes, ORU supports the following strategic goals.

  • Introduce ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈs to undergraduate research earlier in their careers, with an emphasis on inclusion of ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈs from underrepresented groups.
  • Position the ORU to support undergraduate research efforts across the institution.
  • Obtain comprehensive documentation across divisions about participation of undergraduates, graduate ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈs, and faculty, in undergraduate research.
  • Increase visibility of Undergraduate Research.
